Earlier this month at PlayStation Experience, Capcom announced MARVEL VS. CAPCOM INFINITE. As news of the latest installment in the immensely popular fighting franchise spread, fans (myself included) squealed with excitement. Back in 2014, Marvel’s contract with Capcom expired, causing the gaming community to worry about the future of the series. While the game appears to contain the flashy, familiar fun of the previous installments, there are a few significant changes. Instead of having players choose three characters per game, players will now control two. Another addition to the combat is “Infinity Stones,” where players choose one stone to aid their two characters as a special power-up.
Above all, people are wondering if this new contract will result in the loss of signature characters such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four, due to Fox owning the media rights for these characters. While the thought of losing such iconic MvC characters is upsetting, the promise of seeing more characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is enticing. Capcom has only announced six playable characters. So far, Marvel will be represented by Captain America, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel (a newcomer). Meanwhile, Ryu, Morrigan, and Mega Man X have been confirmed as playable Capcom characters.
Considering this is shaping up to be very different MARVEL VS. CAPCOM experience, we can’t help but wonder what the rest of the character roster will look like for both teams. We’ll have to wait patiently for more information, but for now, here is our list of new characters we want to see in MARVEL VS. CAPCOM INFINITE.
1. Black Panther
After his debut in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, it’s clear now more than ever that Black Panther would be a perfect fit for INFINITE’s character roster. And with his movie coming out soon, his MARVEL VS. CAPCOM debut would be timely, to say the least. As a trained gymnast, acrobat, and master of various African martial arts, Black Panther is a quick, agile and powerful fighter that would prove a worthy enemy for just about anyone in the game.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY cemented Rocket Raccoon as a strange but smart addition to ULTIMATE MARVEL VS. CAPCOM. With INFINITE, it seems certain that at least one of the Guardians will be a playable character. What makes Gamora stand out from the rest (besides being the only female) is her hand-to-hand combat skills and use of swords and daggers. Her abilities rival Adam Warlock’s and her potential to defeat enemies that surpass her in strength and durability makes her a character we desperately want to see in INFINITE.
Asura is a demigod from Capcom’s 2012 beat-em-up ASURA’S WRATH. Heavily inspired by anime, Asura’s power comes from his pure anger, allowing him to grow more arms and unleash rapid-fire punches. The animations in the game alone resemble MvC’s colorful and chaotic gameplay. Considering ASURA’S WRATH has only a small cult following, it’s unlikely we’ll see him in INFINITE, but he would certainly make for a welcome addition.
With the success of the Netflix series, it would be insane for Daredevil to not be included in INFINITE. His blindness allowed him to develop a radar sense, heightening his other senses beyond that of a person with sight. He has mastered numerous martial arts from ninjutsu to boxing. Lastly, his baton serves as his multi-purpose tool, functioning as a weapon and a grappling hook. With such a unique set of abilities as well as a kick-ass weapon, let’s hope that the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen shows up ready to fight.
Ryu and Chun-Li have represented the STREET FIGHTER gang in MvC for some time now. The recent release of the fifth installment in the long-running fighting franchise introduced a few new characters. Of the new characters, Rashid would serve as a refreshing addition to Capcom’s team. Hailing from the Middle East, Rashid’s fighting style derives from parkour. Perhaps his most unique quality is his ability to harness the power of wind in his attacks, unleashing literal tornadoes of destruction upon his enemies.
6. Black Widow
Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of Black Widow has amazingly not been given a solo film, despite the significance of her character in the MCU. Her extensive espionage training, athletic abilities, and knowledge of weapons makes her a fairly well-rounded fighter. She has been known to use numerous gadgets, such as a bracelet that fires electro-static energy blasts. Considering her ability as a fighter as well as the sheer popularity of her character alone, it would be extremely surprising if Natasha Romanova didn’t make an appearance in INFINITE.
7. Leon S. Kennedy
Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine have both been playable MvC characters in the past. Even Wesker, the notorious villain from RESIDENT EVIL, showed up in MvC 3. So the question is, why hasn’t Leon? He’s a fan favorite and is easily just as deserving of the spot as any of these other characters (even though he shares similar abilities with Chris and Jill). As a stark contrast to Chris’ “cool guy” persona, Leon would make a great long-range fighter, as his gun is his primary weapon. When up close and personal, he can still handle hand-to-hand scenarios with his trusty knife.
8. Squirrel Girl
One of Marvel’s more unusual but lovable characters, Squirrel Girl has been enjoying time in the limelight with the critically acclaimed ongoing UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL comic. It’s also been announced that she’ll be appearing in Marvel’s new TV series, NEW WARRIORS. Aside from super strength and agility, Squirrel Girl has a furry tail, buck teeth that can chew through wood, and fingers with sharp claws. Oh, and she also has the ability to communicate with squirrels. Just try to imagine her Super Move in INFINITE involving a wave of squirrels attacking her enemy and then tell me you wouldn’t want to see her in the game.
9. The Vision
Arguably the best part about AGE OF ULTRON was the debut of Vision. Thanks to the film, he has been brought to the attention of the masses and seems like an ideal choice for Marvel’s team. What separates him from the other superheroes is not only his appearance, but his unique powers and abilities. Through the Solar Jewel on his head, he is able to fire beams of infrared and microwave radiation. He can also fly and change the density of his body. These powers would fit perfectly into INFINITE’s combat mechanics and his popularity has solidified him as a necessary character.
10. The Punisher
The Punisher is a character just begging to be playable in INFINITE. He’s an expert in hand-to-hand combat and has an arsenal of firearms that make him a force to be reckoned with, especially his military-grade weapons (which would make for an amazing Super Move). If the rumors are true and Deadpool is unfortunately not a character this time around, Frank Castle is Marvel’s must-have replacement.
There are a ton of characters we could add to this list, especially from Marvel. There’s no way of knowing whether or not the X-Men will be left out of MARVEL VS. CAPCOM INFINITE, but even if they are, it’s exciting to know that there will be extra room for some exciting new characters from Marvel’s extensive universe. Since Capcom’s STREET FIGHTER V wasn’t as successful as they had hoped, it’ll be interesting to see how they manage to win over both old and new fans alike with this hotly anticipated fighting game on their hands.
