E3 2019 was a big one. A ton of exciting new titles were announced for gamers of every type. Every big publisher (except Sony) pulled out all the stops to get everyone excited about their new projects. Over the course of this short few days, dozens of titles received announcements. Because of this, it’s easy to find something really exciting to pay attention to. Here we make it even easier with five of the biggest reveals at E3 2019.
ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS Makes a Splash at E3 2019
ANIMAL CROSSING fans have been left without a new entry since the release of NEW LEAF in 2012. Thankfully, this year’s Nintendo Direct delivered, and a new entry is slated for release on March 20th of next year on the Nintendo Switch.
True to form, the teaser features a super cute villager on a super cute deserted island. It seems like most of the focus will be on collecting resources, crafting, and building a small village. But if you think you’ve finally escaped owing Tom Nook thousands of bells… think again. The reveal trailer closes with Nook handing you a bill for his services, which you will no doubt have to begin paying off right away. I don’t particularly mind though; I’ve never had so much fun being in debt!

FINAL FANTASY VII Remake: A 2019 Coat of Paint on a Classic
The FINAL FANTASY series has touched so many people in its many iterations, and FINAL FANTASY VII was no different. There have been rumors going around that a remake was in the works for a really long time now, and fans finally got an exciting new look at the game. And I gotta say, the wait seems to have paid off. The four-minute trailer kicks off with a close look at Aerith’s amazing new character model, which is reminiscent of the original game’s opening scene. Cloud, Barret, and Tifa (finally) also all got incredible new models. The graphics and effects generally look absolutely stunning.
We also get to see parts of the new combat system in action, which seems to strike a balance between the old-school strategic style and more of a modern and accessible real-time hack and slash system. This seems to be a super smart move because it’ll allow newbies a chance to enter the world of FINAL FANTASY while staying true to the classic spirit of the series. Honestly, it looks like they’re definitely doing the original game justice. This game was a huge influence on my journey as a lifelong gamer, and I can’t wait to relive some of those classic moments again.
The FINAL FANTASY VII Remake is set to come out March 3rd of next year.
BREATH OF THE WILD 2: Micro Teaser, Mega Hype
In a surprise move, Nintendo teased a sequel for the wildly successful LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD at E3 2019. Luckily, the trailer seems to tell us more about the game than you’d think. We see Link and Zelda in a cave, and find a withered Ganon held in place by a magical hand. It seems like Zelda loses her footing as the ground gives way. Link falls trying to save her, and the magical hand holding Ganon prisoner reaches out to save him. Of course, this releases Ganon, and he reawakens in a super creepy sequence complete with neck cracking (shudder). Hopefully, that also means that the hand has transferred some sort of ancient power to our hero. He’ll probably need the extra help to defeat Ganon again.
This trailer serves as a very short teaser, just to let fans know what they’re working on. Unfortunately, the trailer ends by saying the game is “now in development”. This means will likely not see a release date until next year’s E3 at the earliest. Either way, it’s nice that Nintendo is being so transparent about their projects.
MARVEL’S AVENGERS Saves the Day
We’ve been hearing plenty of rumors lately that there were plans for an Avengers game, and thankfully we finally got a trailer.
The new game takes place in San Francisco on an Avengers appreciation day called A-Day. Suddenly, amid the festivities, the Golden Gate Bridge mysteriously explodes. The team immediately gets to work using their unique abilities to beat up generic Bad Guys. This is a good showcase of each character’s strengths and how they may play in the game. For example, Iron Man will have use of his chest laser, Thor will be able to throw Mjolnir at enemies and recall it back to his hand, and Black Widow will likely make use of her ranged weapons.
The latter part of the reveal trailer shows that the Avengers take the blame for the A-Day attack. Because of this, you will likely track down the true culprit to reclaim your status as a hero. It also shows a very short sequence of Iron Man free-floating in space, which sounds like a super cool mission to me.
MARVEL’S AVENGERS is set to release in May 2020.
A CYBERPUNK 2077 and Keanu Reeves Crossover?
CD Projekt Red announced CYBERPUNK 2077 at last year’s conference, and subsequently released a 48 minute gameplay video highlighting the various aspects we can look forward to. The trailer featured the protagonist and their partner Jackie going to retrieve military technology from a local gang. This year’s trailer, however, shows Jackie’s death and a fight with the man who sent you on your mission. The end of this year’s video shows your ocular systems booting up in a junkyard. A familiar face claims “we have a city to burn,” played by none other than Keanu Reeves.
Even if you didn’t watch the conference, chances are you heard about Reeves’ breathtaking performance, as it was one of the most high profile announcements at E3 2019. This new trailer suggests that the main story is some sort of revenge plot against the man who hired you for the murder of your partner. Using cybernetic arm-swords to kick butt with Keanu Reeves has got to be the most badass game idea I can think of. I can not wait until it comes out.
The release date for CYBERPUNK 2077 is April 16th, 2020.
This year’s E3 may be over, but each of these announcements gives us something new to look forward to. These new titles make me excited for 2020, which is shaping up to be an excellent year in gaming. We’ll likely continue to hear news come out about these games and more, so keep an eye out for updates.
