INSOMNIAC’S SPIDER-MAN video game is certainly shaping up to be a contender. This Fall, amongst other video games including the new RED DEAD REDEMPTION, SOULCALIBUR, and BATTLEFIELD games, Insomniac is looking to take their chances. With the success of the BATMAN: ARKHAM series from a few years ago, most superhero games have taken their cues from its combat. Very few games innovate beyond that and we’re left with an ARKHAM clone with the serial numbers filed off. I’m hoping INSOMNIAC’s SPIDER-MAN can break that curse.
With some impressive visuals and what’s shaping up to be an impressive villain stable, not to mention some really cool mechanics under the hood it’s looking promising. The real and most important question is; what skin’s will we have for Spider-Man? As well as a little primer into what we can expect with the game itself, I’ve cooked up my own skin wishlist for INSOMNIAC’S SPIDER-MAN.
Swinging in Style with INSOMNIAC’s SPIDER-MAN
It wouldn’t be a Spider-Man game without bad guys to fight. Combat looks to be fun and fluid and we can expect to be able to upgrade the webhead’s abilities. In sticking with his agility, Spidey is a force to be reckoned with. He’s bouncing around, quipping and doing whatever it is a spider does. Ok, mostly punching, but still, it looks nice. While all of that I’m sure will be fun, what most piques my interest is the web-slinging you can do around the city.
Back on the original Xbox, the second Spider-Man movie video game will be the one to beat. For an original Xbox title, the swinging around the city was surprisingly fluid and fun. Whereas the first movie game had the webs attach to an invisible ceiling, the second game had the webs attach to buildings.
For some reason, even though it’s a small change it was enough. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend hours in that damn game swinging around the open world. INSOMNIAC ‘S SPIDER-MAN game looks to top that, however. You have plenty of acrobatic tricks up your sleeve and swing to your heart’s content around New York.
A Real Spider-Man Story
From the few story trailers we’ve gotten, including E3 it looks like you’ll be facing off against The Sinister Six. While originally it looked like Spider-Man villain Mr. Negative would be the main one, the new trailer keep’s the main one offscreen. I’m hoping we’ll get to see some Venom and maybe even an appearance from Carnage. Maybe I’m asking too much from INSOMNIAC’s SPIDER-MAN.
One of the most exciting aspects of this being a stand-alone story was a recent announcement by Marvel. We’re getting a new massive Spider-Man universe crossover, and INSOMNIAC’s SPIDER-MAN is included. We’re getting a massive influx of Spider-Men (and women!) from around the multiverse. Since almost all of the previous Spider-Man games have been based on movies, we can finally see this one interact with the Marvel comics-verse. You see what just happened there? I’ve made a super smooth swerve into that skin-list.
Top 10 INSOMNIAC’s SPIDER-MAN Skin Wishlist
10. Amazing Bag-Man
Come on, you know I had to include this. Way back Spider-Man lost his costume and had to borrow one of the Fantastic Four’s spares. For some reason, he also wore a bag over his head instead of a mask. I’m trying to imagine swinging around the city in this and it’s damn hilarious.
9. Spider-Man 2099
Like everyone in the 90’s, Marvel tried to be extreme. They launched a brand new universe set in the future of 2099, and this future had its own Spider-Man. He went by Miguel O’Hara and wore this sweet suit here. I love the predominantly blue color scheme with the red highlights, as well as the Batman-esque gauntlet spikes.
8. Scarlet Spider
While a lot of people don’t seem to like Ben Reilly, I have a bit of a soft spot for Pete’s clone in his super sweet 90’s duds. Something about the ridiculousness of the hoodie over what amounts to a red jumpsuit is hilarious to me.
7. 2002 Rami Film
Look, we all love Tom Holland as Spider-Man. He is — note for note — a great Spider-Man and Peter Parker. However, Tobey Maguire will always have my heart, I grew up with these movies. They took the superhero genre and showed it could work, and be family friendly (Sorry Blade, I still love you!) Something about those raised webbing lines on the suit always looked cool to me.
I don’t really even know what the whole backstory is here, I don’t have the time to look it up, honestly. All I know is that this costume looks really fricken cool. It’s especially hilarious that someone as agile as Spider-Man needs armor.
5. Assassin Spider-Man
What if Spider-Man used his powers for money instead of being a hero? In this alternate universe, Peter replaced his web shooters with guns and teamed up with Wolverine to kill people. Yes, that’s right, he replaced his web shooters with guns. The costume does look a little bit similar to a later one on my list, but we’ll get there when we get there. Overall, still a really cool looking costume.
4. The Symbiotes
I could’ve used up how many different slots on this list with all of the symbiotes from the comics, but I figured I’d put them all in one entry. This includes entities such as Carnage, Venom, Agent Venom, Anti-Venom, Toxin, Scorn and so many other’s. While I know this one is a hell of a long-shot, seeing any one of these in the game and being able to swing around and fight crime would be absolutely awesome. Special shout-out to Agent Venom for being Peter’s reformed high school bully Flash Thompson.
Marvel bringing back Gwen Stacy, albeit in an alternate universe, was one of the best decisions they’ve ever made. Giving her a suit and spider powers plus her own alternate universe to protect and tool around in? Even better. Plus, the suit just looks damn cool. While something about the white and the sleekness of it just meshes very well together. If they were even good enough to give us an alternate voice for her…wait I’m asking too much.
2. Miles Morales
Now, I’m 90% sure they’ve teased Miles as being in the game, but for now, it remains unconfirmed. Miles is a great character and was a great way to introduce the Spider-Man character to a new generation. Starting in the Ultimate Universe, Miles eventually proved popular enough to swing over (get it!) to the main universe. I grew up reading ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, and after Ultimate Peter’s death, I was significantly miffed about his being replaced. However, from Issue #1 Miles won me over.
1. Superior Spider-Man
Can you hear the anger from here? I know I can! Dan Slott’s run on Spider-Man wasn’t without its controversy, and actually killing mainstream Peter Parker was indeed a straw too many for some. I, however, loved Dr. Octopus’ turn in Peter’s body. Seeing the former villain, now occupying Peter’s body, with Peter’s mind in tow was a great move. Everything about his costume is great, from the claws to the legs (it is Doc Ock) to the black & red screams bad guy. As the run went on, though, Slott managed to fully flesh out Doc Ock and also made him quite the fascinating character.
Wrapping It Up
I know I’ve missed some of your favorites, but quite a few of them have been confirmed already. If nothing else, INSOMNIAC’S SPIDER-MAN is shaping up to be a fun romp through New York City. However, only time will tell if it stands up to the BATMAN: ARKHAM series in terms of staying power and good story-telling. Specifically, can all of the above elements come together to form a cohesive whole? Or despite all the shiny paint, will INSOMNIAC’s SPIDER-MAN just be a repeat of what has come before?
Stacking up your villains does not a good game make.
I’m ready to be pleasantly surprised come this September, and here’s hoping it’s as fun as it looks. Did I miss any skin’s you liked? Looking forward to the game yourself? Put your ideas down in the comments!
